TheprincessisMerida（voiceofKellyMacdonald），seeninanaction-packedprologueasaflame-hairedScottishtomboywhoselifeischangedbyanearlybirthdaygiftofabow,whichquicklyinspireshertobecomethebestarcherinthekingdom.ThenweflashforwardtoMeridaasayoungladyofmarriageableage,whoisstartledbyrequestfromQueenElinor（EmmaThompson）tochooseamongthreepossiblehusbandschosenbyherclan.
Nothingdoing,especiallysinceallthreecandidatesaredoofuses.Meridaleapsuponhertrustysteedandfleesintotheforest,whereherfriendsthewill-o-the-wispsleadhertothecottageofagnarledoldwitch（JulieWalters）。ShebegsforamagicspellthatwillchangeQueenElinorsmind,butitchangesmorethanthat:ItturnsElinorintoabear.Witchesneverknowhowtostopwhentheyreahead.
Luckily,themagicspellcomeswithanescapeclause.Meridahasexactlytwodaystoreversethecharm.Aftersheandhermotherabsorbwhathashappened,theybegintoworktogetherandgrowcloserthanever,eventhoughthequeencannotspeak.Thereisatrickycomplication.KingFergus（BillyConnolly）hadhislegbittenoffbyabear（intheprologue），andhasbeenindisposedtowardthemeversince.Unsurprisingly,whenheseeshiswifeasabear,hefailstorecognizeher.
Andsoon.Thisisagreat-lookingmovie,muchenlivenedbytheinspirationofgivingMeridathreesmallbrothers,littleredheadedtriplets.TheScottishHighlandsarethrillinglypaintedinastonishingdetail,andsomeactionshowsMeridasarcherymorethanequalinassortedemergencies.
"Brave"hasanupliftingmessageaboutimprovingcommunicationbetweenmothersanddaughters,althoughtransformingyourmomintoabearisaratherextremefirststep.Elinorisagoodsport,underthecircumstances.ButMeridaisfarfrombeingatypicalfairy-taleprincess.Havingflatlyrejectedthethreesuitorsproposedbyherfamily,sheisapparentlypreparedtogothroughlifequitehappilywithoutahusband,andwecanimagineherinlateryears,aweatheredandindomitableAmazonqueen,sortofaBoudicafortheScots."Brave"seemsatalosstodealwithherasagirlandmakesherasortofhonoraryboy.
